COVID-19 Response & School Reopening

At LILA, we are eager and ready to reopen once K – 12 schools in LA County receive clearance to hold in-person classes. Currently, LA County has still not managed to bring COVID-19 cases down to a threshold that would allow schools to reopen.

School resumed on Wednesday, August 26. We are holding in-person classes for preschool and Pre-K to accommodate our youngest students. Students in K – 12th grade have begun the year via remote e-Learning. This webpage will serve as your information hub regarding reopening timelines and protocols.

Latest Head of School Communications/Updates

Dear LILA LA Community,

As you are undoubtedly aware, a significant upsurge in COVID-19 cases across the country has seen much of California return to the State’s Widespread (purple) category, where LA has been for many weeks and will certainly stay for the remainder of 2020. Essentially, this means that the only students we will be able to have back on campus before winter break are those whom we can welcome under the K-2 waivers (approved for Pasadena and pending for Los Feliz and West Valley) and specialized services provisions. As arrangements will vary across campuses, your campus director will keep you apprised of site-specific details.

Please note that there will be no Head of School briefing or Wednesday update next week (November 24 and 25, respectively). I look forward to reconnecting with you during the next Head of School briefing on Tuesday, December 1 at 5:00pm.

Warm wishes to all for a safe Thanksgiving,

Michael Maniska
Head of School

Dear LILA LA Community,

Thank you to all of our families who joined us for last night’s Head of School briefing.

As mentioned during the meeting, LA County remains in the Widespread (purple) category in the State Reopening Framework. As it stands, Tuesday, December 1 is now the earliest date by which we could have confirmation of our ability to reopen fully for in-person learning.

As you are likely aware, we have submitted our Kindergarten – 2nd grade waiver applications for our Los Feliz, Pasadena, and West Valley campuses. We have not yet received an answer regarding our applications, but we will certainly keep our Kindergarten – 2nd grade families apprised of any progress toward an approval.

In the meantime, we are eager to welcome small groups of students onto our LA campuses through the specialized in-school services provision from the LA County Department of Public Health. This will begin during the week of November 16 and will look different on each campus. Further to the information shared during last night’s campus check-ins, details will be forthcoming from your Campus Director.

Please note that our next Head of School briefing will not take place until Tuesday, December 1. I look forward to reconnecting with you then.

Warm regards,

Michael Maniska

Dear LILA LA Community,

It was lovely to reconnect with so many of you last night for our weekly Head of School briefing.

As mentioned during the meeting, LA County remains in the Widespread (purple) category in the State Reopening Framework. As it stands, Tuesday, November 24 is now the earliest date by which we could have confirmation of our ability to reopen for in-person K-12 learning.

As you know, we are moving forward with waiver applications for Kindergarten – 2nd grade for our Los Feliz, Pasadena, and West Valley campuses. This process should take 2-3 weeks. We will keep our K-2 families apprised of any progress toward a potential K-2 waiver approval for their respective campus.

A friendly reminder that there will be no briefing next Tuesday, November 3. Our next Head of School briefing will be on Tuesday, November 10 at 5:00pm.

Until then, please remember that our COVID-19 Response & School Reopening page provides convenient access to all Weekly Wednesday Updates, our health & safety measures and reopening protocols, and more.

Warm regards,

Michael Maniska
Head of School
