COVID-19 Response & School Reopening

At LILA, we are eager and ready to reopen once K – 12 schools in LA County receive clearance to hold in-person classes. Currently, LA County has still not managed to bring COVID-19 cases down to a threshold that would allow schools to reopen.

School resumed on Wednesday, August 26. We are holding in-person classes for preschool and Pre-K to accommodate our youngest students. Students in K – 12th grade have begun the year via remote e-Learning. This webpage will serve as your information hub regarding reopening timelines and protocols.

Latest Head of School Communications/Updates

Dear LILA LA Community,

It was lovely to reconnect with so many of you during last night’s Head of School briefing.

As you are likely aware, a Targeted Safer at Home Order was issued for LA County on December 30, 2020. This Order allows schools that are already open to stay open, so on-campus learning will continue for our preschool – 2nd grade classes.

That being said, we have made some key decisions as a result of the fact that LA County remains very much in the Widespread (purple) tier of the State’s reopening framework, together with the expectation that we are heading into an aggravated post-holiday surge. Please note the following details for the weeks ahead at our LA-area campuses:

> For the entire month of January, the following arrangements will apply:

By campus, only classes in preschool – 2nd grade will continue in person as they have been. For any questions about arrangements on your campus, please reach out to your campus director.

All 3rd – 12th grade classes will continue to operate exclusively in remote e-Learning mode.

> From Monday, February 1, we foresee the following:

By campus, preschool – 2nd grade classes will continue in person.

In all likelihood, in-person learning for 3rd – 12th grade during the month of February will be for only a limited number of students under the specialized services provision. Your campus director will keep you apprised of site-specific details.

Please note that our next Head of School briefing will not take place until February (exact date TBC). As always, I will continue to be in touch regularly to share any important updates in the meantime.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support of our efforts to maximize the health and well-being of every member of our LILA community.

Warm regards,

Michael Maniska
Head of School

Dear LILA LA Community,

I hope you were able to find time to rest and rejuvenate over the Thanksgiving weekend. It was lovely to reconnect with so many of you during last night’s Head of School briefing.

In light of the upsurge in COVID-19 cases right across the state, I wanted to share some key decisions made in an effort to maximize the health and well-being of every member of our school community. Please note the following details for the weeks ahead at LILA:

> Between now and winter break – and assuming no further state or county directives – we will continue to operate by campus as we have been in recent weeks.

> Winter break will be preserved as scheduled, from Friday, December 18 through Sunday, January 3 inclusive. No classes will take place during this time.

> From Monday, January 4 until at least Tuesday, January 19 (the day after the Martin Luther King Jr. long weekend), the following arrangements will apply:

We will welcome only preschool – 2nd grade classes on our Los Angeles campuses. Your campus director will keep you apprised of site-specific details.

All 3rd – 12th grade classes from our Los Angeles campuses will continue to operate exclusively in remote e-Learning mode.

Please note that there will be no Head of School briefing until Tuesday, January 12 at 5:00pm. Of course, I will continue to be in touch regularly to share any important updates in the meantime.

Thank you, as always, for your partnership and support in keeping our LILA family, and our extended community, healthy and well.

Warm regards,

Michael Maniska
Head of School

Dear LILA LA Community,

As you are undoubtedly aware, a significant upsurge in COVID-19 cases across the country has seen much of California return to the State’s Widespread (purple) category, where LA has been for many weeks and will certainly stay for the remainder of 2020. Essentially, this means that the only students we will be able to have back on campus before winter break are those whom we can welcome under the K-2 waivers (approved for Pasadena and pending for Los Feliz and West Valley) and specialized services provisions. As arrangements will vary across campuses, your campus director will keep you apprised of site-specific details.

Please note that there will be no Head of School briefing or Wednesday update next week (November 24 and 25, respectively). I look forward to reconnecting with you during the next Head of School briefing on Tuesday, December 1 at 5:00pm.

Warm wishes to all for a safe Thanksgiving,

Michael Maniska
Head of School
