COVID-19 Response &
School Opening Status

At LILA, we are eager and ready to fully open once K – 12 schools in LA County receive clearance to hold all in-person classes.

School resumed on Wednesday, August 26. Since then, we have been holding in-person classes for preschool and Pre-K to accommodate our youngest students, while students in K – 12th grade began the year via remote e-Learning. We are currently holding K – 2nd grade in-person classes, as permitted under the LA County and Pasadena waiver programs. As allowed under the State of CA reopening framework, we began welcoming students in 3rd – 6th grade for full in-person learning as of March 2021. A select number of students in 7th – 12th grade have also continued in-person attendance since November 2020, as part of the California and LA County specialized services provision and college entry exams program.

This webpage will serve as your information hub regarding the School’s current opening status and further reopening timelines and protocols.

Latest Head of School Communications/Updates

Dear LILA Community,

What a true joy it has been to welcome approximately 75% of our LA campus preschool – 12th grade students back to our campuses! Thank you for your trust and collaboration in making this a safe and successful return to campus.

As we enter the final stretch of the 2020-2021 academic year, I’d like to share several important updates for the remainder of this school year and the summer.

The LA County travel advisory was updated this week; it now distinguishes between those who are fully vaccinated and those who are not. As most students are not vaccinated, students who travel outside California during spring break (Friday, April 16 – Friday, April 23) may not come to campus for 10 days following their return. Current LILA policy does not permit a negative test result to be used to shorten this 10-day quarantine period.

The physical distancing requirement for schools has been reduced to 3 feet between students but remains 6 feet between adults and adults to students.

We expect more students to return to in-person learning following spring break. If your child has not yet returned to campus and you would like them to do so after the break, please proceed as follows:
> Los Feliz, Pasadena, and West Valley families: email your campus directors.
> Burbank families: complete the brief survey that will be sent to you before the end of this week.

For our students who will not return to campus this year, we will continue to offer remote parallel learning through the end of the current school year. Please note, however, that there are no plans to offer ongoing online learning next school year.

Following LA County advice, and as allowed based on the current reopening tier, we are planning to host physically-distanced, in-person graduation ceremonies for our Kindergarten, 5th grade, and 12th grade students. Families of graduates, please keep an eye out for more details coming soon.

Looking ahead to the summer, please note the following arrangements:
> No in-person summer camps will be offered for Kindergarten – 12th grade students at any of our LA campuses, to allow for the completion of important campus projects.
> Campus directors are exploring the possibility of offering a period of daycare to our current preschool and pre-K students and will be in touch with families in the near future.

For any questions about arrangements for your campus, please reach out to your campus director.

I take this opportunity to reiterate my profound gratitude to everyone in our LILA community. We are tremendously appreciative of your support.

Warm regards,

Michael Maniska
Head of School

Dear Burbank 7th – 12th Grade Families,

In very happy news, LA County’s COVID-19 adjusted case rate has fallen well below the required 7/100,000 threshold that qualifies the County for the State’s Substantial (red) tier. We therefore anticipate that we could have the green light for a full, in-person return for 7th – 12th grades as soon as next Wednesday, March 17.

Given how soon we hope to welcome these grades back, please be sure to complete this return to in-person learning survey by tomorrow, Thursday, March 11 at 11:59am (PT), if you have not yet done so. If you have already submitted your response(s), thank you; no further action is needed at this time.

To facilitate a smooth return to campus for our 7th – 12th graders, the Burbank team will be adopting the staggered reopening plan outlined below (in text and table formats):

Week of March 15 – 19:
> Assessment and testing week for 11th and 12th grades
> Continued specialized services only for a limited number of 7th – 12th grade students
> Continued in-person learning for 6th grade

Week of March 22 – 26*:
> Monday, March 22: 8th, 11th, and 12th grades
> Tuesday, March 23: 7th, 11th, and 12th grades
> Wednesday, March 24: 7th, 8th, 11th, and 12th grades, plus 10th grade PSAT takers only
> Thursday, March 25: 7th, 8th, 11th, and 12th grades, plus 9th grade PSAT takers only
> Friday, March 26: all 7th – 12th grade students on campus
*In-person learning will continue for all 6th grade students throughout the week.

In view of these exciting developments, Ms. Harvey and M. Mondange invite all 7th – 12th grade parents to join them via Zoom for a Burbank campus briefing next Tuesday, March 16 at 5:00pm.

Thank you all for your continued support. We are excited to welcome our Burbank students back to campus after a year away!

Warm regards,

Michael Maniska
Head of School

Dear LILA LA Community,

We were delighted to welcome nearly 75% of our 3rd – 6th grade students back to our LA campuses just yesterday. What a joyous occasion!

The LA County COVID-19 adjusted case rate has maintained its steady decrease once again this week, moving us much closer to the State’s Substantial (red) tier that would enable us to welcome our 7th – 12th grade students back to campus. Once the required red tier (7/100,000 adjusted case rate) is reached, it must be maintained for two weeks prior to 7th – 12th grade students’ full, in-person return.

For now, the following arrangements will continue to apply:

By campus, preschool – 2nd grade classes will continue in person.

By campus, 3rd – 6th grade classes will continue in person. Remote parallel learning will continue to be available for students who are not returning to campus at this time.

While we await the green light for a full, in-person return for 7th – 12th grades:
> All 7th – 12th grade classes will continue in remote e-Learning mode.
> Under the specialized services provision, in-person learning will continue to be available only for a limited number of 7th – 12th grade students.

For any questions about arrangements for your campus, please reach out to your campus director.

With our 3rd – 6th grade classes operating steadily, today’s Wednesday Update will mark the end of my weekly messages for 3rd – 6th grades.

As always, I will continue to be in touch regularly to share any significant updates.

Warm regards,

Michael Maniska
