Below you will find several important pedagogical publications relating to our middle and high school academics and environment.

At the end of 8th grade, students choose either the “pre-French baccalauréat” or the “international” section for 9th and 10th grade. This represents a choice of following either a composite of French and American coursework based on the traditional French Lycée curriculum, to which the necessary elements of the American program are added; or an international curriculum unique to the International School of Los Angeles, aimed at preparing them for the International Baccalaureate® Diploma Programme.

The French baccalauréat program allows all students to take the diplôme national du brevet or diplôme national du brevet – international, a French national examination covering math, French language and literature, history/geography/civics, and art history.

At the end of 10th grade, students take the DELF examination (Diplôme d’études en langue française), which certifies their proficiency in the French language.

For 11th and 12th grade, students formally apply to, and enroll in, either the International Baccalaureate® Diploma Programme or the French baccalauréat program including the OIB (option internationale du baccalauréat). Both programs are rigorous pre-university courses that meet the needs of highly motivated high school students. Every secondary student, regardless of academic orientation, takes on average 32 periods of classes per week; each period is 50 minutes in length.

As well as being prerequisite for continuing with secondary schooling in France, the Brevet provides good exam preparation experience. It can also be useful for facilitating entry into francophone universities and colleges as it proves the student has a good level of French and has met certain assessment criteria.

In April 2015, the International School of Los Angeles received official accreditation by the French Ministry of Education to offer the International American Section of the French curriculum in middle school, making the School the first one to achieve accreditation in North America to deliver the Diplôme National du Brevet – International (DNB-I), and thereby allowing the School to lead the way in international education in French schools across the continent. The School’s 6th, 7th and 8th grade students will be officially recognized as Section Internationale Américaine from 2015-16, with our first DNB-I graduates being the 9th grade in 2016-17.

International Baccalaureate (IB)

The International Baccalaureate is a comprehensive two-year curriculum which promotes student autonomy, independent research, and a rich, post-modern educational environment. The Diploma model is designed as a microcosmic version of a university degree program.
The Diploma Program consists of six academic areas. Subjects are studied concurrently and students are exposed to the two great traditions of learning: the humanities and the sciences.

In addition, the IB requires:

The Extended Essay (EE): students conduct independent original research and write a 4,000-word essay

Theory of Knowledge (TOK): students are encouraged to consider how they know what they know and to develop habits of reflection which they bring to each subject, resulting in a deeper intellectual experience

Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS): awakens students to a more compassionate and active citizenship through at least 150 hours of extra-curricular activities

At the International School of Los Angeles, the following IB courses are offered at the Standard (SL) or Higher (HL) Level:

Group 1: English, French

Group 2: English, French

Group 3: American History

Community Service

A true international education must include community service, if we are to raise socially-conscious children who will understand social and political issues in the real world. The International School of Los Angeles has made it mandatory for ALL juniors and seniors (IB and FB) to complete 150 hours of CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service), originally solely an IB requirement.

Service
